The village of Tununak is located on the north facing coast of Qaluyaat (Nelson Island), on the Bering Sea coast of the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, 116 miles west of Bethel, the regional hub. The village has been continuously inhabited for thousands of years by Qaluyaarmiut (Nelson Islanders), who speak a distinct dialect of Central Yup’ik. Tununak has a shared history and has cultural similarities to the other Qaluyaat communities (Nunakauiak aka Toksook Bay, Umkumiut, Negtemiut aka Nightmute, and the recently relocated Niugtaq/Mertarvik aka Newtok), as well as the communities of Canineq (Lower Kuskokwim Coastal area). Tununak also has a long history of trade and cultural exchange with the Cup’ig of Nunivak Island, just across the Etolin Strait. Tununak has a population of about 350.
